Online Gambling Could Be Legalized If Bill is Passed

Barney Frank

Washington D.C. 13/06/07: A new bill that legalizes and regulates internet gambling has received the attention of congress. On June 6, 2007 U.S. Rep Barney Frank introduced H.R. 2046, a bill which would essentially create exemptions to the online gambling ban for properly licensed operators. If passed, the new legislation would call for the creation of a system that not only allows most Americans to lawfully bet online, but prevents compulsive gamblers and children from doing so. In addition, the proposed system would increase the security of online financial transactions to combat money laundering and fraud.

H.R. 2046 was discussed at a June 8th hearing. Prior to this date, Frank urged all supporters to contact their state representatives and communicate their wishes for regulated and legalized online gambling. Kelly Larkin, Director of Scheduling for the House Financial Services Committee reportedly confirmed that supporters’ calls prior to the hearing would be instrumental in getting state representatives on board.

Casino Gambling Web posted a list of Congress phone numbers on its web site, and sponsored an online petition to declare the UIGEA void. They also encouraged other web site, newsletter, and forum owners to alert their visitors to Frank’s proposed calling campaign.
