The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), a non-profit membership organization in the U.S, now boasts 220,000 members. This marks a 40% increase since the PPA welcomed Senator Alfonse D’Amato as its new chairman. D’Amato, former chairman of the Senate Banking Committee believes that the UIGEA may actually leave the U.S. government in a weaker position to deal with the very problems the legislation aims to prevent.
"If they want to curb underage gambling, you're certainly not going to curb it with this kind of thing," D'Amato said. "You will simply drive people to offshore facilities that may not have, or who won't be inclined to have the kind of regulatory controls that will see to it that there's an honest game that can be put in place to prevent underage gambling and deal with problem gamblers."
